DVD format war begins with arrival of Blu-Ray discs, player

LOS ANGELES The D-V-D format war has begun.

Today, Sony Pictures released the first seven films in the new Blu-ray format. It's backed primarily by Sony and a majority of Hollywood studios, including Disney, M-G-M and Twentieth Century Fox.

The releases, which include "50 First Dates," "Hitch," and "House of Flying Daggers," will play on the new Blu-ray D-V-D player from Samsung Electronics, which goes on sale next week for 999 dollars.
