Sky HDTV News - High-def Freeview trial begins
So you thought your dreams of watching the World Cup were over when the Sky HD installer never turned up? Well, there still might be a chance. The BBC has begun broadcasting high-definition programming using the Freeview digital terrestrial platform.
But while the free-to-air broadcasts cover much of the London area, only 400 lucky punters currently have the chance to see it.
On April 11, the BBC used an AV enthusiast forum to ask for 400 testers for its new HD service. Fortunately, eagle-eyed What Hi-Fi? Sound And Vision guru Andrew Everard spotted the post, and applied.
Then, a couple of weeks ago, he was contacted by the BBC to ask if he was still interested. When he said he was, he was told to pay a visit to Channel 4’s HQ to pick up one of the limited edition Freeview HD boxes.
